Head of Software Development

Location: Negotiable

Job Description:

As the business continues to mature and scale it is now the right time to strengthen the QLM in-house software capability and knowledge with the right technical leadership. This appointment will bring increased knowledge of firmware and embedded software working with the business, responding to customer demands, and harmonising software to end-user systems.

As the initial product is locked down, the focus will shift to delivery, stability and scaling, allowing the product to consolidate and integrate with individual customer and end-user systems.

At a time when awareness of climate change, greenhouse gases and environmental responsibility has never been higher, QLM have a solution which allows organisations to take control of their ESG responsibilities. This is a superb opportunity to help shape and evolve the future direction of QLM’s software and help drive a more sustainable future for the world.

You will lead the team that defines, documents, deploys, and “owns” the software and firmware. Currently QLM have a mixed internal and consultant team. You will take over that team and expand it by recruiting and contracting new engineering talent in line with their ambitious growth plans.

This is a true full-stack role that will involve developing algorithms, applications, controls, APIs, interfaces, networks, analytics, and deployment processes. QLM’s immediate customers range from large international oil and gas service and equipment providers to smaller local operators in the water utility industry. You will be working closely with QLM’s customer-facing business, product, and operations teams to understand how their technology works and what it needs to become, defining together the strategic technical directions for their software and analytics.

The position also requires someone who can make strong hands-on tactical contributions as QLM evolve new software from internal research and development concepts into integrated, customer-ready applications for secure networked operations. As a small company QLM take a “necessary and sufficient” approach to quality processes and procedures. Management of software/firmware release branches to multiple distinct customers is of growing importance so you will help advance their engineering towards an IS09001 certified QMS and product lifecycle management (PLM) process.

Responsibilities:

  • Software engineering of modern C++ software on the camera and software development of C++ cloud analytics
  • Help recruit and build a world-class software and analytics team
  • Work closely with the direction of the commercial team product marketing and hardware engineering to help design and architect major customer features
  • With senior technical team (principally CTO & founder, engineering leads and software architect) to rationalize, get consensus on and implement a technology stack that enables QLM to scale deployment of their cloud-connected devices
  • Rapidly develop and deploy new product features in a fast-turn iteration and improvement process.
  • Ensure adherence to continuous improvement practices as required to meet quality and time to market imperatives to produce a stable, robust product
  • Report on the status of development, quality, operations, and system performance to peers and leadership team
  • Manage off-site contractors and off-site employees

  • Manage and enforce robust and complete configuration testing to pursue our goal of zero service issues in the field.
  • Develop a database infrastructure that enables high volume collection and extraction and use of high quality and value content.

Suitable Qualifications:

We are looking for an experienced development lead who has a proven track record of managing products.

We are open to candidates who do not have extensive line management experience but have the technical skills and experience and an aptitude and desire to become a line manager and budget holder.
