Severn Trent’s Carbon Programme

Post by Gurpal Singh , Project and Change Associate Apprentice at Severn Trent

"I’m wrapping up my first month as part of the Process Emissions team in Severn Trent’s Carbon Programme, and it’s been a great start diving into impactful projects while settling into the role. Last Friday, I was at our site in Minworth for a meeting with Bharani Sri, Alex Harrison, Richard Smith where we reviewed and refined our strategy for emissions (Nitrous Oxide and Methane) spot sampling and data review to ensure it aligns with our future goals. After the meeting, Alex and I took the opportunity to explore some of the monitoring technologies currently in place, giving me valuable insight into how our systems operate on the ground. We focused on one of our LIDAR cameras (pictured below), which detects methane by emitting laser pulses that interact with gas molecules. Using differential absorption techniques, it measures methane concentrations across a 300-meter radius—an impressive tool for monitoring emissions on site! Technologies like this allow us to detect dangerous leaks, support our carbon reporting, and give us some key data for us to work with to further improve our processes. We currently have these LIDAR cameras installed across 3 sites, with plans to install more towards the end of the financial year. I’m excited to see how this project develops and to continue contributing to tackling process emissions during my current rotation with the Process Emissions team!"
